History of Exit Signs

The earliest exit signs were basic text panels illuminated by incandescent bulbs. Not exactly glowing champions. In the 1970s, Japanese designer Yukio Ota revolutionized safety signage with the running man exit symbol to transcend language barriers.

Yukio Ota was from Tokyo, Japan. The first implementation of his iconic design was in a Japanese public building—setting the standard for future global safety signage.

Modern exit signs now use LEDs and photoluminescent materials, staying lit even during power outages. From dark hallways to burning buildings, they remain a beacon of hope... and green light.
